To investigate the effects of different vegetation environments on temperature and humidity with wet and dry bulb thermometers in hand, deep in bare ground, on lawns and among bushes;

Stopping to walk and stooping to collect leaves from deciduous broadleaved, evergreen and coniferous forests to take back for specimens;

Stand in front of the map and carefully imagine the emerging guide to Mount Qingcheng, learning from the text 'Three Gorges' in which movement and poetry are blended;

Climbing to the top of the mountain, waving the team, league and party flags in their hands and leaving a group photo in front of Laojunge;

This group of students, what are they doing?

On 29 April, Dujiangyan Wanhui School organised the "Gathering the Power of Youth and Showing the Mission" Youth Day and Mountain Walking Course at Mount Qingcheng. The students and teachers explored the red patriotic sentiment and revisited the spirit of May Fourth in their hometown, and tasted the fragrance of grass and trees in Qingcheng Mountain and studied the source of Taoist culture in depth.

Not just hiking
It's a walking course for over half a month

At 7.20am, Wanhui students and teachers set off in formation in the morning sun. On the way, the students were all carrying a Walking Lesson booklet and discussing with each other about the rest of the journey.

It turned out that the event was not as simple as just a hike up the mountain but each student brought at least two courses with them and they had to complete the corresponding task list while in the Qingcheng Mountains.

According to the report, as early as April 23, Li Defang, deputy director of Wanhui Student Development Centre, led six subject teachers of history, geography, language, art, music and physical education to discuss and design the pre-curriculum of "Ask the Way to Qingcheng and Learn Wanhui".

The teachers have integrated six subjects from Red Heritage, History, Humanities and Geography, Biological Sciences, Poetic Qingcheng and Creative Arts with the students to create a wonderful pre-curriculum and curriculum booklet. Students can choose at least two courses on their own with Red Heritage as a compulsory option.

Before the activity began teachers of each subject also led students to study and discuss relevant knowledge from the cultural heritage of Taoism to the topography of Mount Qingcheng and the remote mood of the poet sage's writing, all of which were explained in detail to lay the foundation for the students' next practical activities, and to carry out pre-trip mobilisation and safety education.

"For the students of Wanhui, in school, they can harvest a solid cultural foundation; outside of school, through walking courses, they can transform and export their knowledge to achieve the application of learning. Only in this way can they truly read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles, be diligent in the four bodies and divide the five grains, and become giants of learning and strong in action." said Lu Jieshu, Headmaster of the Junior Middle School of Wanhui Academy.

Putting Learning to Use
Wanhui students learn the beauty of learning in the landscape

"Create a youthful China with a youthful me, and write a youthful chapter of the times without regrets!" With the speech of Wang Bo, the assistant headteatcher of the school, the school teachers and students officially started the day's hiking activities.

During the hike, the group stopped from time to time to meditate on the cleanliness and clarity of Taoist culture and to record the seclusion and beauty of Mount Qingcheng with their cameras.

This walking course is not only an extension of learning on campus, but also a good place to test what you have learnt.

The students were seen working in small groups, skillfully taking out paper, pencil and equipment and working in small groups to complete the task list one by one. Of course, the teachers were also on hand to give some guidance and direction.

They are constantly using their imagination and creativity, turning 'input' into 'output' and applying their knowledge from various disciplines to understand, analyse and solve appropriate problems. Such dynamic lessons immerse the students and make them happy with the joy of 'applying what they have learnt'.

Learning by doing, learning by enjoying
Make learning faster, better and easier for students

In fact, such "walking courses" are the norm at Wanhui.

The school's philosophy is "learning by doing, learning by enjoying", and each course is a three-dimensional classroom combining in-class and out-of-class, book and practice.

The school is not only equipped with the world's largest single school Metal & Woodworking Workshop, where students can develop their practical skills and enhance their sense of independence and innovation through practical experience; it is also equipped with a home economics classroom to develop students' life skills and Chinese and Western dining etiquette for a healthier and better quality of life.

For the traditional curriculum, teachers also love to take the classroom out of the classroom. The biology teachers often take the students on field trips to explore and learn about plants, bringing the knowledge from books to life in front of the students' eyes and making every plant and tree in the school a part of the curriculum.

Lu Jieshu said that the ideal education model of "learning by doing, learning by enjoying" is being implemented in Wanhui, which enables students to learn faster, better and more easily.

In the future, Wanhui will continue to explore walking courses, leading students to walk their hometowns, feel the history of the land and experience its customs.

With the integrated experiential learning of "Study Tour + Project-based Learning + Career Planning", students develop the seven qualities of responsibility, integrity, humility, communication, socialization, collaboration, collaboration and emotional control, and establish a closer connection with themselves, knowledge, peers, teachers, school, parents, career and even society and gradually cultivate strong career planning skills.
