Voice in your heart, "English" is wonderful - The first English dubbing competition in the secondary section of Dujiangyan Wanhui Academy

The breeze was not dry and the sun was just right. In the afternoon of May 14, 2021, the first "Huiying Cup" English dubbing competition of our secondary school was held in the small theatre of the junior school. The ten participating teams had prepared carefully over the past few days and brought us an excellent audio-visual feast.

After the opening remarks of the three hosts, the audience was transported by the contestants into a world of audible English.

The contestants chose a wide range of voice-over works, with many original English cartoons and film clips being screened. The films chosen for the competition were all familiar classics.

The voice-over contestants gave their best effort to portray each character with their proficient spoken English, intonation, expressions and body language, presenting an audio-visual feast for teachers, students and parents.

During the competition, everyone watched attentively and felt the magic of voiceover. The wonderful performances resonated strongly with the audience and there was constant applause.

Group 1 The Incredibles
Dubbing contestants: Li Junhao, Tang Tianyi, Huang Bozheng

The 1st group interpreted The Incredibles with a high level of performance. They perfectly imitated the voice intonation in the original with great attention to detail.

Much of the difficult jargon in the original film was perfectly followed by the contestants, as evidenced by their thorough preparation before the competition. The robot mimicry drew a lot of laughter from the audience and created a lively and relaxed atmosphere.

Group 2 Weathering with You
Dubbing contestant: Liao Junyi

Group 2 was an individual entry with the dubbing of 'Weathering with You'.

The dubbing contestants brought out the admiration of the teenager Hiraka for Yona and his belief in life in the film through the language and tone of voice, showing the inner monologue of the teenager and making more people enjoy the film.

Group 3 Harry Potter
Dubbing contestants: Wang Hao, Yan Zijia, Zhou Xiaofu, Mou Si Rui

Group 3 presented the English dubbing of Harry Potter. As a classic film, Harry Potter still attracts many fans with its magical charm. The contestants used the charm of their voices to lead us into the world of Harry Potter with their authentic English voices. They were so successful in their recreations that they had the audience clapping their hands on several occasions.

It is worth mentioning that Mr Wang, the assistant headmaster, was also invited by the participants to take part in the dubbing competition. Mr Wang, who graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in mechanics, also demonstrated to the children and parents his fluency in speaking and excellent imitation skills, teaching by example more than by word.

Group 4: Despicable Me
Dubbing contestants: Zhou Zhihao, Li Yujia, Li Siwei, Xu Lulu, Wei Meixi, Wu Jiahui

Four of the five students were new to the secondary section and had only been practicing for two days, but they still lit up the room with their performances!

Group 5 Ballerina
Dubbing contestants: Ms. Wang Jingyue, Yang Yujia, Li Jiaxin, Ni Zinjie

The next group was Ballerina. As soon as the contestants appeared, we could see their roles by their costumes: Camille, the ballerina; Odette, the gentle and kind Paris Opera cleaner; Merat, the choreographer; and Félicie, the resolute and ordinary girl who pursues her dreams.

The group's dubbing was a perfect grasp of the characters' emotions and their language was imitated so well that the audience burst into applause from time to time.

Group 6: Coco
Dubbing contestants: Gao Mingjian, Liu Rui Ze, Ye Yichen

Coco was entered by a team of three boys who not only did the voices, but also the interpretations, highly recreated the actions and mannerisms from the play, as well as unexpected props, such as using a broomstick instead of a guitar, to achieve unexpected comedic effects.

The photos in the film were hand-drawn by the contestants, Liu Rui Ze, who imitated the photos in the animation. They prepared for the competition with their hearts and really got into their roles.

Group 7 Frozen
Dubbing contestants: Cao Lichuan, Yong Ruhan, Chai Choran

Fairy tales are a haven for the imagination, a world of beauty that enchants with its innocence and beauty. When the small country of Arendelle is covered forever in ice and snow by a magic spell, an extraordinary adventure begins in order to find summer back.

Group 7 disguised themselves as Princess Anna, Kristoff the Mountain Man and Snowball the Snowman to present a short clip from Frozen. They added highlights by cleverly using singing and acting to enrich the voiceover performance. Among them, Yong Ruhan's solo part not only showcased her crisp singing voice but also her talent for mimicry.

Group 8 Monsters University
Dubbing contestants : Luo Xin, Jiang Siyi, Pu Pengji

The 8th group of contestants presented 'Monsters University'. The three contestants took on the challenge of playing eight characters. They played the roles of Mike the excited and energetic wide-eyed boy, Mike the comical snail, Sullivan the giant monster, Dean Hardscrabble the mean-spirited dean, Nate the professor and many more.

The group accomplished the challenge of the film's fast speech and many characters, making it an eye-catching experience.

Group 9 Journey to the West
Dubbing contestants: Huang Ye Xin, Song Zhen Yi

Unlike the British and American classics presented by the other contestants, the 9th group presented an English dubbing of the 86th edition of the Chinese classic "Journey to the West", using English to dub the familiar Monkey King and the Silver Horned King. The voice intonation was exquisite and the action performance was astonishing.

The originality and freshness in the selection of materials and the positive export of local culture demonstrated the cultural confidence of the participants.

Group 10 Madagascar
Dubbing contestants: An Yuxuan, Tu Yixiang, Liu Yangfan, Yin Haoming

The finale of the competition was Madagascar, where the contestants used lively performances and explosive voices to recreate the classic clip from Madagascar - the escape to Africa.

The plot of the film was brought to life by the four contestants, who not only delivered their lines with great expression but also highly recreated the sounds of falling and hitting from the sky in their voice intonation which drew applause from the audience.

After enjoying this wonderful audio-visual feast, the first, second and third prizes were selected based on the overall performance of the contestants after a professional review by the judges. The best male and female voice actors were also selected through public reviews. Congratulations to the following winners.

Using their voices to convey their love of language and their emotions to interpret their understanding of the characters; each voice is a conversation with the soul and each interpretation is a tribute to the classics.

The wonderful dubbing scenes and vivid characters, with different voices, show the persistence and love of language learning of Wanhui students, and help them to pass on, learn from each other, innovate and develop in cultural exchange, cultivate an open mind and enhance cultural confidence.

A minute on stage is a decade of work. Every exciting show is dependent on the careful selection of materials, serious training and teamwork of the contestants.

Every line, every movement, every expression and every understanding came from the tireless efforts and polish of the contestants time and time again, as well as the support of the parents, the careful guidance of the teachers and the dedication of all the teachers in the Secondary Section. All this added up to a classic feast of light and shadow.

The diversified campus activities of Dujiangyan Wanhui Academy have become a stage for Wanhui students to showcase their talents, a window to grow in knowledge and an opportunity to improve their literacy.
